Mean or Nice?

Sometimes I feel as if I have had a new awakening. That my eyes are reopened to a world I already knew about, but either didn’t fully think about it before or it never really registered.

For example, the way in which people relate to each other often has to do with their past. This is something that I have been well aware of, but at the same time there are moments when I feel like I am reminded of this fact. During these instances my mind mulls it over a little longer, thinks about it a little harder, and connects subconscious dots.

Why are some people I know negative about everything and everyone? Not in a depressed way, or simply unhappy, but people who seem to go out of their way to be mean. They hide their mean thoughts in shrouds of compassion. They pretend to have an air about them that is concerned for the well-being of others only to turn right around and tell that person they are stupid or unworthy or whichever way they choose to put someone down and they mean it. It’s not done in a joking manner. That is something I don’t understand.

Yet, I’ve watched some people do it over and over again. I am not the only one who as realized these people are hurting others. It stands out more than they think, people take notice whether they realize it themselves, and as I think about it I see how much it has hurt them more than whatever original pain caused them to start in the first place. Their actions are going-have become a vicious cycle.

I’m not saying I perfect, but I do know there is a difference between how I’ve treated others when in a bad mood versus years of putdowns and angry comments. I am sorry for whatever caused them to be so bitter towards life. Yes, we all have our moments, our days, but usually we get over it. I’m not talking about deep seated tragedies here. I pray that God will heal their pain and help them find the joys of love and compassion found in being nice. Sometimes words do speak louder than actions.
