Skippy's Big Day

Skippy is epileptic. That news came after a shocking panicked phone call at work from Phillip. When he sounded upset I knew that whatever reason he was calling for was not good. “I don’t know what to do with Skippy. He’s thrashing all over in his kennel and foaming at the mouth. He’s glaring at me like he wants to bite me.”

I immediately call home for my mom who used be an animal control warden in Bloomington. No answer.

I call my dad to find out where my mom is. “Phillip just called he’s freaking out. Where’s mom?” “I think she’s at the vet with Cody.” “Oh! I gotta go.” And I hang up on him.

I try my luck at calling my mom’s cell phone. Usually it’s never on and if it is on she doesn’t answer. “Hello?” “MOM!” After a series of rushed words and a quick conversation with a vet tech I schedule a Drs Appointment for as soon as I can get Skippy there, IF we think we can move him… he might be rabid.

I get home and Skippy just stares at me. No wagging tail, no happy to see your home puppy dance. He’s all wet and stinky from the foam and drool that came from his mouth. He looks out of it and nothing like my dog. Phillip is just standing there looking at me. What do we do? Phillip won’t let me touch him. End point is we need to get him to the vet. I go get the truck and Phillip grabs leather gloves to load him in the back. Skippy doesn’t fight or growl or appear to want to attack, that is good.

We drive to the vet in tension. Phillip tries to break my unhappy, scared mood by talking about something else, but I’m just worried. If he has rabies he has to go down. Then how does that affect humans, Duke, Monet and Cody? What if they all have to go down just to be on the safe side? I want to throw up.

It was a great thing my mom happened to already be at the vet. She was there to meet us. The vet hospital already had a connection to her. Sometimes you need your mommy to take over…They were concerned about even seeing him. If he has rabies that is a big issue, but we brought him in and he was examined.

Seizure. Most likely he suffered from a seizure. Phew…we left him there while they ran some blood work to make sure he was healthy and his other vital organs were functioning well. He was given an excellent bill of health.

When I saw him again his tail wagged, he was happy, energetic and his old self again. Well, mostly his old self. This time he let Phillip and my dad pet him! And he took food from them! Maybe that seizure took away his scared-i-ness. Ha, we’ll see if it lasts. I’m glad he is okay for the most part and as long as it happens once a month or less he can stay med free too.

I am very thankful for Phillip and my mom. They helped me through it all. Here is me relaxing after the whole event and after this weekend's events...
